I have been the Band Director of GMS since 1999. When I started the 6th grade band had about 40 students and the 7th & 8th combined band had a grand total of 35. Within 2 years the "Combined Band" concept was put to the test as we squeezed 110+ 7th and 8th graders in the band room. After that year we decided to split into 3 separate bands, divided by grade level.
My focus at GMS is to prepare students for High School band. I set a goal of 100% of the notes, 100% correct, 100% of the time. I set that goal at the start of the year. My philosophy is that when you set a goal, it must be both challenging and attainable. By encouraging students to make "Meaningful Markings" in their music and to ask questions about fingerings and rhythms, students are receptive to corrections and also become able to offer advice and suggestions to other students. So much so that I can individually make corrections during band, and students don't get discouraged or embarassed. In fact, when I give the correction, they often express appreciation that they are 1 note closer to reaching our goal. It's really kind of cool :) Each band meets once every 3 days, following our 3 day schedule. One band day, students also have lessons during the day. Lessons are a part of their grade. At home, students should be practicing at least 10-20 minutes, 5 out of the 7 days per week. Students can apply for an exemption from school lessons if they participate in Private Lessons. Practice time and accomplishments are recorded in a practice journal. Practice Journals are turned in every 2 weeks and must be signed by a parent to receive credit. Students who miss less than 3 practice journals during the first 3 terms, will be rewarded with an exemption from turning practice journals in for term 4. Extra Credit is also given when a student can show proof that they attended or performed at a cultural event like band/chorus/orchestra concert, a musical, etc. Download a Practice Journal
